Three Peacocks
I was on a Florida Airbnb property walking around with the owner. She stated that occasionally wild Peacocks visited her site. No sooner did she utter the words when 2 shimmering peahens and 1 peacock jumped up on a bordering wall. We were both pleasantly surprised and I was thrilled I had my camera.
Black-throated Blue Warbler
While walking in my local Brooklyn park, I happened upon this small stunner! Most people would not expect to see such a bird and most don't as he only spends a short amount of time in the NYC area. He stops here in the Spring on the way up north and the Fall, on his migration south. It is a magical moment when you get to see such a splendid bird.
Contemplative Pursuit
I watched this Great Egret hunting for his next meal. He would pause for periods at a time, staring into the pond in a contemplative manner. I quickly captured the moment of stillness in the waning light.
Snowy Egret In Golden Light
During July in Brewster, MA there is a Herring run, which is a migration of Herring that spawn in the streams on Cape Cod. There had to be about 50 Snowy Egrets noisily waiting for the fish to pass. There was trouble to be had if one egret got in another's space, which happened constantly as they were fighting for the traveling fish. Finally, I saw a Snowy Egret standing alone, head tilted towards the sun. The water shimmered behind him as I quickly captured that ephemeral moment.
Bullseye
I fell in love with Anhingas on my first birding trip to Florida. Anhingas are not found in NYC, so it was a real treat to find this bird, especially in breeding plumage. Breeding plumage happens during the spring when a bird's plumage becomes more colorful to attract a mate. Look closely at this Anhinga. Do you see the blue encircling his eye? This eye makeup will only be seen for a couple of months! I also love that they fly like a dart, hence the title, "Bullseye".
Tricolored Heron
It was as if this Tricolored Heron positioned himself to match his perch. He was found in Charleston, South Carolina in a wildlife management area (WMA). WMAs are extremely important as they protect much needed habitats and the wildlife who visit and live there. This beautiful heron flew in next to a cormorant and chased him away. It was as if the branch was made solely for him.
Three Humpback Whales
What an amazing experience to be amongst Humpback Whales on a trip out of Provincetown, Massachusetts! These three were bubble-net feeding just off the coast of Race Point Beach. This is when a group of whales encircle a school of fish. They spiral around the fish, creating a bubble and then surface, scooping up their catch. It was an awe-inspiring moment and I had to hold the camera steady while the waves tossed our boat around.
Black-crowned Night Heron
This Black-crowned Night Heron was caught at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Not many people know that the palace houses a rookery for all sorts of birds. I visited the Palace of Fine Arts in the afternoon and found it to be too crowded. The next morning I rose at 6:00 am and jetted over. But for the random jogger, the place was empty. While strolling inside, I happened upon this perched heron in the morning light. I love how the sun is illuminating a spider web below his right foot.
Green Heron In The Darkness
When visiting a grist mill on Cape Cod, I came upon a Green Heron preening in the light. I stood observing and shooting him as he was shaking the water off his feathers. All of a sudden he flew into a shaded area. Not having a second to change my settings, I quickly photographed his ascent. The result created a lovely lit up bird with a black background.
Northern Cardinal
At my first show a woman entered my booth and proceeded to look through all my prints. She looked up and asked, "Do you have any cardinals?" I replied that I did not, as they are very common and I didn't think a photo would be sought after. Her response was, "You really should have cardinals." "You know when people see them, they think of their loved ones who passed." I thought about it and took her advice. I found this brazen model hiding amongst the trees in Central Park. He even comes with his own NYC attitude.
Yellow-rumped Warbler
This photograph of a female Yellow-rumped Warbler was published in F-stop magazine. Many people ask me if it is photoshopped. It is not as I don't know how to use the program. This was a case of me capturing this warbler in the trees with a little bit of sun peeking in. It is one of my favorite shots because of the speckled lighting.
Port of Tarifa
"Is that Africa?!", I asked my husband. I couldn't believe my eyes when we arrived in Tarifa, Spain. It's not every day that you can see another continent from where you are standing. Tarifa, Spain was a mix of wonderful people, food, birds, and beaches. Of course we did take the ferry over to Africa, which I highly recommend.
